Dark Hollow Cemetery
A town as old as Roan Mountain, TN has got to have its share of ghost stories. The story behind Dark Hollow is among one of the most popular.
Down Dark Hollow Road is a small cemetery that is said to be site of some ghostly activity. The cemetery sets isolated on the side of a hill, surrounded my many trees. It is quite old and littered with many unmarked graves. It is said, when driving past this cemetery after dark, that a mysterious force is sometimes felt jumping onto the back of your car (or into your backseat), as if trying to get away from something, or someone.
The origin of this tale apparently goes back to the beginning of the twentieth century. According to local hearsay, a woman in the community was very fond of men, which made the other women in the community a bit jealous. Although she was not considered very attractive, she apparently had the reputation for having had many affairs with married men.
According to rumor, the wives of the community tried to discuss the matter with the local preacher. Although I’m sure that the preacher did not recommend violence, it is said that the wives decided to deal with the woman in their own way.
At this point it is unclear what actually happened to the woman. Some people say that she overheard the wives’ plot to cause her harm and fled the community. Other’s think the worst. Whatever happened, it is certain that she was never seen again.
